Locked in a Vegas Hotel Room with a Phantom Flex

Great sound design on this!

Violating the laws of nature. Playing God. Capturing stuff we are not supposed to see. Potentially opening up a wormhole in the fabric of time.

These are a few of the things I think about while shooting with a Phantom High Speed Digital Cinema camera. The above video is a bunch of test footage I shot to get familiar with the new “Flex” version. I shot inside my Las Vegas Palms Casino hotel room between the hours of 2am and 6am. If you had a Phantom in your bedroom, you would stay up too!

This past weekend, I worked in Las Vegas for FOX shooting the World Championships of Ping Pong (WCPP). Yea, Ping Pong. This is a big sport in many parts of the world and I was working one of the first big televised events. In fact, this program will air all around the world to over 80 million households in the coming months. My job was to capture this fast and mentally demanding sport in a way that was never before seen. Slowing down a celluloid ball by shooting at 2,564 frames per second using a Phantom Flex. The beast can even slow a bullet at 10,000 FPS 480p!

Shop Vac

A kinetic typography music video for Jonathan Coulton’s Shop Vac. This was created using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere and Toon Boom Animate.

I worked on this sporadically, so it’s difficult to estimate how much time went into it. Somewhere between 500-1000 hours, but it was a labor of love.

This year’s titles for FOTB were created by Nando Costa through the use of macro motion pictures and materials with magnetic properties.

The choice of materials was driven by the desire to graphically represent the concepts of attraction and repulsion. The idea that graphic artists of all sorts attend events such as FOTB because they are inspired and therefore attracted to each other’s work, while at the same time often competing in the same fields as peers, which represents the repulsion factor.

Weather Tests is an exploratory film project by Savas Ozay which is an attempt of exaggerating actions and physics of each season.

35mm is a shortfilm about cinema itself. We picked 35 of our favorite movies and tried to simplifly them as far as possible. The outcome is a 2 minute journey through the history of film.

Take a close look and tell us if you’ve recognized them all!”

Pixel invasion! Incredible.

(I’m) Still in Motion vol.1

“Well, this time I was wanting to try something a little bit different. Focusing on the design and get a little bit away from the fact that sometimes we animate stuff for bad reasons : “wow it’s moving, it’s magic” says your dumb happy client. And I do believe that sometimes a good motion piece is before everything a good graphic design.

So well, it’s just the volume one, I have a lot more in stocks to do when I have some times. It was fun to do some (I hope) nice still images, but still… in motion.”
